RAID Ecological Diver Course
The RAID Ecological Diver course is a specialty program that provides divers with a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems, their interconnections, and conservation practices. It teaches eco-friendly diving techniques to minimize environmental impact and promotes advocacy for ocean preservation. A non-diver version is available, focusing on theory and conservation knowledge without practical diving.
This course emphasizes knowledge of marine life, ecosystem challenges, and sustainable behaviors. For divers, it includes application of eco-skills during dives.
Benefits of the RAID Ecological Diver Course
- Gain detailed knowledge of marine ecosystems, including flora, fauna, and their relationships.
- Learn techniques for conducting dives with minimal environmental impact.
- Develop skills to identify and address threats to aquatic environments.
- Build advocacy abilities to promote conservation among others.
- For divers: Apply eco-principles in real-world diving scenarios.
- For non-divers: Acquire conservation knowledge for land-based or volunteer efforts.
- Access to digital materials for lifelong reference.
Prerequisites
- No minimum age, prior diving certification, or swimming requirements.
- Open to certified divers and non-divers alike.
- Completion of a medical questionnaire (for the diver version; physician approval required for certain conditions).
- Standard RAID forms, including liability release and safe diving practices agreement, via the RAID User Portal.
- For minors (under 18): Parental or guardian consent and signature on required forms.
Course Structure
The course combines online theory with optional practical application for divers:
1. Academic Development
Completed via RAID’s online FREe-Learning platform. Topics include:
- Marine ecosystem relationships and interconnections.
- Flora and fauna identification.
- Human impacts on aquatic environments.
- Conservation strategies and proactive preservation methods.
- Eco-friendly diving practices (for divers). Students access digital manuals, complete quizzes, and pass a final exam at their own pace.
2. Practical Sessions (Diver Version Only)
Integrated eco-skills during open water dives (typically 2 dives, site-specific; no fixed depth limits).
- Focus on applying sustainable techniques and observing ecosystems.
- Non-diver version: Theory only, no water sessions.
Duration and Depth Limits
- Theory: Self-paced online (typically several hours to days).
- Practical sessions (diver version): Site-specific, usually 1-2 days including dives.
- No specific depth limits or mandatory dive count for certification.
- Certification allows eco-conscious diving worldwide with no additional restrictions.
Equipment Provided
During training, the dive center typically supplies all required scuba equipment, including:
- Tank
- Regulator
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
- Mask, snorkel, fins
- Weights
- Non-diver version: No equipment required.
Participants need only personal items such as swimsuit and towel if diving.
Certification
Upon successful completion of academics (and practical skills for divers), students receive a globally recognized electronic certification (e-card) issued by RAID. The certification is permanent and downloadable from the RAID portal.
Ecological Diver: Authorizes eco-friendly diving with emphasis on conservation.
Ecological Non-Diver: Certifies knowledge for advocacy and responsible environmental behavior without diving.
