RAID Independent Diver Course
The RAID Independent Diver course is a specialty program for experienced divers that emphasizes self-reliance and self-rescue skills in recreational no-decompression diving. It teaches the use of redundant equipment, including a backup gas source (bailout or stage cylinder), deployment of a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB), and management of additional backup gear. This enables competent diving without relying on guaranteed buddy support, while remaining within recreational limits.
The course prepares divers for scenarios where a buddy may not be able to provide effective assistance, enhancing overall safety and making graduates highly reliable partners.
Benefits of the RAID Independent Diver Course
- Develop self-rescue capabilities for handling emergencies independently.
- Master the preparation, carriage, and use of a redundant gas source.
- Learn effective DSMB deployment for ascent control and surface marking.
- Gain proficiency in managing redundant equipment (e.g., backup lights, masks).
- Plan no-decompression dives with a focus on personal risk management.
- Improve overall diving competence, making participants ideal buddies.
- Access deeper recreational sites safely up to certification limits.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 18 years (16 with parental consent).
- Certified as RAID Open Water 20 and Deep 40, or Explorer 30 or Advanced 35, or equivalent from a recognized agency.
- Minimum of 50 logged underwater hours or 100 open-circuit dives.
- Completion of a medical questionnaire (physician approval required for certain conditions).
- Standard RAID forms, including liability release and safe diving practices agreement, via the RAID User Portal.

Course Structure
The course combines online theory with practical sessions, including confined and open water training, conducted by a certified RAID Independent Diver Instructor:
1. Academic Development
Completed via RAID’s online FREe-Learning platform. Topics include:
- Self-reliant dive planning and risk assessment.
- Redundant equipment selection and configuration.
- Gas management for independent ascents.
- Emergency procedures and self-rescue techniques. Students access digital manuals, complete quizzes, and pass a final exam at their own pace.
2. Practical Sessions
Hands-on training:
- Confined water skills refinement.
- Open water dives focusing on redundant gear use, DSMB deployment, and scenario-based self-rescue.
Duration and Depth Limits
- Theory: Self-paced online (typically several hours to days).
- Practical sessions: Site-specific, typically 2-3 days including multiple training dives.
- Maximum training depth: 40 meters (130 feet).
- Certification limits: No-decompression dives to 40 meters (130 feet) in conditions similar to or better than training, with or without buddy support.
Equipment Provided
The dive center typically supplies rental scuba gear, including tanks, regulators, BCD, and specialty items such as bailout cylinders and DSMBs.
Upon successful completion of academics and practical skills, students receive a globally recognized electronic certification (e-card) issued by RAID. The certification is permanent and downloadable from the RAID portal. It authorizes recreational no-decompression diving to 40 meters (130 feet) with self-reliant procedures.
Certification
Upon successful completion, students receive a globally recognized electronic certification (e-card) issued by RAID. The certification is permanent and downloadable from the RAID portal. It authorizes no-decompression buddy diving to 35 meters (115 feet).
