RAID RAIDaptive Buddy Course
The RAIDaptive Buddy Course trains certified divers to assist RAIDaptive Divers (divers with disabilities certified through the adapted RAID Open Water 20 program). It focuses on providing support for specific skills that RAIDaptive Divers may not perform independently, ensuring safe and inclusive diving experiences.
The course emphasizes adapted techniques, communication, and teamwork to “fill in the gaps” while maintaining high safety standards.

Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Certified as RAID Master Rescue Diver or equivalent from a recognized agency.
- Complete the standard RAID dive medical questionnaire and liability release forms.
- Physician approval required if any medical concerns are indicated.
Course Structure
The course uses RAID’s online e-learning platform for theory, combined with practical sessions led by a qualified RAIDaptive instructor.
- Assisting with adapted Open Water skills (D1, D2, D3) for RAIDaptive Divers.
- Techniques for transfers, lifts, and other support methods.
- Specialized communication and signaling in adaptive scenarios.
- Teamwork strategies for safe and effective buddy support.
- Practical exercises applying assistance techniques.
Duration and Depth Limits
Theory completable online (estimated 4-6 hours); practical training typically 1-2 days, including confined water sessions (minimum of two confined water dives; open water may be included based on needs).
Equipment Provided
During training, the dive center typically supplies all required scuba equipment, including:
- Tank
- Regulator
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
- Mask, snorkel, fins
- Weights
- Specialty items as needed
Participants need only bring personal dive essentials, a swimsuit and towel.
Certification
Upon successful completion, students receive a globally recognized RAIDaptive Buddy certification. . The certification is permanent and downloadable from the RAID portal.
