RAID Explorer 30 Course
The RAID Explorer 30 course is an advanced entry-level continuing education program designed for certified Open Water divers. It focuses primarily on practical training to enhance core diving skills and introduce specialty areas through five open water dives. The course emphasizes buoyancy control, navigation, and deep diving procedures, allowing certified divers to conduct independent buddy dives to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet) in conditions similar to or better than those experienced during training.
Age-specific variations include:
- Junior Explorer 30: Ages 12-15, maximum depth 21 meters (70 feet) with an adult certified buddy of equal or higher certification.
- Standard Explorer 30: Ages 15 and up, maximum depth 30 meters (100 feet) with a certified buddy.
Dives completed in this course may credit toward further certifications, such as the RAID Advanced 35 or individual specialty courses.
Benefits of the RAID Explorer 30 Course
- Builds advanced proficiency in buoyancy control, underwater navigation, and deep diving planning and procedures.
- Includes five open water dives: three mandatory (Deep, Navigation, Buoyancy) and two electives chosen from a range of specialties (e.g., Night, Drift, Wreck, Search & Recovery).
- Provides practical experience in varied diving environments, improving overall diver comfort and competence more efficiently than accumulating general dives.
- Optional integration of Trimix principles during the Deep dive.
- Prepares divers for more advanced training while allowing immediate access to deeper dive sites.
- Promotes safe, responsible diving practices.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 15 years (12 years for Junior Explorer 30).
- Certified as RAID Open Water 20 or equivalent from a recognized agency.
- Some centers require a minimum of 4 hours logged underwater time in open water.
- Completion of a medical questionnaire. Certain conditions require physician approval.
- For minors (under 18): Parental or guardian consent and signature on required forms.
- Required personal items: Swimsuit and towel (all scuba equipment typically provided by the dive center during training).
Participants must complete or update standard RAID forms, including a liability release and safe diving practices agreement, via the RAID User Portal.
Course Structure
The course is conducted by a certified RAID instructor and emphasizes practical application with minimal additional theory:
1. Academic Development
Brief online theory via RAID’s FREe-Learning platform, covering advanced dive physics, deeper dive planning, and specialty-specific knowledge. Includes digital manuals, quizzes, and a final exam completed at the student’s pace.
2. Equipment Orientation
Review and fine-tuning of scuba equipment setup for deeper and specialty dives.
3. Open Water Training
Five open water dives:
- Mandatory dives: Deep (up to 30 meters/100 feet, with optional Trimix), Navigation (compass and natural reference techniques), Buoyancy (advanced control and hovering).
- Elective dives: Two chosen from available specialties (options vary by dive center and conditions, e.g., Night Dive, Drift Dive, Wreck Penetration, Search & Recovery). Skills focus on real-world application, controlled ascents, and environmental adaptation.
No confined water sessions are required beyond prior certification.
Duration and Depth Limits
- Theory: Self-paced online (typically a few hours to a weekend).
- Practical sessions: Usually completed over 2-3 days, centered on the five open water dives.
- Maximum training depth: 30 meters (100 feet), scaled to 21 meters (70 feet) for juniors.
- Certification limits: Independent buddy dives to 30 meters (100 feet) for adults (or 21 meters/70 feet for juniors) in comparable or better conditions.
Equipment Provided
During training, the dive center typically supplies all required scuba equipment, including:
- Tank
- Regulator
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
- Mask, snorkel, fins
- Weights
- Specialty items as needed (e.g., lights for Night Dive, SMB)
Participants need only bring a swimsuit and towel.
Certification
Upon successful completion, students receive a globally recognized electronic certification (e-card) issued by RAID. The certification is permanent and downloadable from the RAID portal. It qualifies divers for deeper recreational diving and credits toward advanced programs.
Next Steps to Enroll
1. Create a free account on the RAID User Portal: https://user.diveraid.com
2. Access and complete online learning materials via the FREe-Learning Center (optional purchase for digital course access, providing lifetime availability).
3. Contact the center to book, discuss fees, and schedule your session. The center will unlock training materials, conduct the program, and handle any recognition.
