RAID Scuba Diver Course
The RAID Scuba Diver course is a condensed entry-level certification program that provides the essential knowledge and skills for supervised scuba diving. It is designed as a shorter alternative to the full RAID Open Water 20 course, allowing participants to begin diving sooner. This certification permits dives to a maximum depth of 12 meters (40 feet) under the direct supervision of a dive professional.
Suitable for individuals with limited time, it includes specific adaptations for younger participants:
- Cadet Scuba Diver: Ages 10-11
- Junior Scuba Diver: Ages 12-14
- Standard Scuba Diver: Ages 15 and up
Certified RAID Scuba Divers may dive in groups of up to four students per supervising professional, in conditions similar to or better than those experienced during training.
Benefits of the RAID Scuba Diver Course
- Acquires core scuba skills, including breathing underwater, buoyancy control, basic navigation, and safety procedures.
- Enables supervised dives to 12 meters (40 feet) immediately upon certification.
- Shorter duration compared to full open water courses, making it suitable for busy schedules or introductory experiences.
- Promotes safe and environmentally responsible diving practices.
- Serves as a stepping stone; skills and dives can often be credited toward the full Open Water 20 certification.
Prerequisites
- Minimum age: 10 years (with age-specific program variations as noted above).
- No prior scuba experience required.
- Basic water comfort (ability to swim and float; no advanced swimming test needed).
- Completion of a medical questionnaire. Certain medical conditions require physician approval.
- For minors (under 18): Parental or guardian consent and signature on required forms.
- Required personal items: Swimsuit and towel (all scuba equipment provided by the dive center).
Participants must complete standard RAID forms, including a liability release and safe diving practices agreement, and can be sourced online via the RAID User Portal.
Course Structure
The course is delivered by a certified RAID instructor and consists of three main components:
Academic Development Completed through RAID’s online FREe-Learning platform. Topics include:
- Basic dive physics and physiology
- Equipment familiarization
- Safety protocols and procedures
- Dive planning and environmental awareness Students access digital manuals, complete quizzes, and pass a final exam at their own pace.
Equipment and Workshop Sessions Hands-on orientation at the dive center covering assembly, fitting, and use of scuba equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, regulator, tank, and weights).
Practical Water Sessions Include:
- Confined water training (swimming pool): Mastery of essential skills such as buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, and emergency procedures.
- Open water training: Minimum of four dives to practice and demonstrate skills in real conditions, including surface entries/exits, finning techniques, and controlled ascents.
Duration and Depth Limits
- Theory: Self-paced online (typically a few hours to several days).
- Practical sessions: Usually completed in 1-2 days at the dive center.
- Maximum training depth: 12 meters (40 feet).
- Certification limits: Dives to 12 meters (40 feet) with a professional supervisor, in comparable or better conditions.
Equipment Provided
During training, the dive center supplies all required scuba equipment, including:
- Tank
- Regulator
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
- Mask, snorkel, fins
- Weights
